Mutt won't log in: Login failed - Ask Ubuntu

I have tried to configure mutt, but it won't login to Gmail. I copy and pasted the following into muttrc (with my own details), but it always says: Login failed. Some people have said to change: set smtp_url = "smtp://[user]@[email protected]:587/" to: set smtp_url = "smtps://[user]@[email protected]:465/" but it does not work for me.

mutt -d 1 All I kept getting was Login Failed. Then I came across this link posted by Google. The last step is what solved the problem. It told me to log in from the new device now and it finally worked!!! It might be different for everyone but try all the above methods and see which one works for you.

I've tried first logging into GMail using a web browser then using mutt from the same machine. I've tried changing muttrc settings to ensure TLS is always used. I've tried the unlock captcha link. All have failed to let my mutt work with a "do not allow less secure apps" GMail account (but may solve login problems in different scenarios).

Using Mutt to access gmail via imap - Google Groups

"login failed" also in red. pretty much the same as some of my earlier attempts. I'm guessing there's something special about google w/imap that I don't understand. or maybe my mutt binary is missing some compile-time option (it's the standard mutt from Centos-6), though when run as "mutt -v" it does show "+USE_IMAP", so I'd think it should work.

Multiple accounts with Mutt E-Mail Client (gmail example ...

Problem I'm having is the gmail accounts work fine when the default account is set to gmail. When I try and change to the accounts on the other server I get login failed. Same thing a happens if I try and change the default account as one of the other two accounts, the other accounts work and when I try change to gmail I get again login failed.
